Rochester Hills Mayor and Residents Awarded Oakland University Alumni Honors
Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from Oakland University (OU). As OU’s highest alumni honor, the award recognizes peerless volunteer leadership in service to OU or its alumni association. Barnett graduated from OU in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He currently serves as immediate past chair of the Oakland University Alumni Association Board of Directors.
“Given his warmth, wonderful sense of humor, and commitment to family and community, Bryan is truly an exceptional individual. His accomplishments as a political leader on the local, national, and global stage are so very impressive. Yet, he remains grounded, humble, and focused on the needs of his constituents,” said Gary Brancaleone, Alumni Awards Selection Committee member. “As an alumnus of Oakland University, Bryan is the very embodiment of our motto: seek virtue and knowledge. The people of Rochester Hills and the Oakland University community are better because Bryan is among us.”
Rochester Hills residents Gary and Elspeth Coats received Oakland University’s Spirit Award, which recognizes exemplary volunteer service to the university. Gary is a senior tax analyst at American Axle & Manufacturing and graduated from OU in 1995 with a double major in accounting and finance. Elspeth is a 1991 OU graduate with a degree in management information systems. She works as a senior business systems analyst at NetSol Technologies. Together they founded the OU Student Life Endowed Scholarship and Gary and Elspeth Coats Student Involvement Scholarship. Active in the community, Elspeth and Gary have both served as president of the Rochester Area Jaycees.
