CheyzEdward N. Cheyz

February 04, 1927 – July 27, 2013

CHEYZ, EDWARD N. of White Lake; July 27, 2013; age 86; Loving father of Tina (Mike) Mitchell; Beloved grandfather of Sarah Mitchell and Emily (Doug) Strait; Dear brother of Margaret Reilly; also cherished by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Cheyz, niece Rosemary Chyz, and his brothers Ernie Chyz and Albert Chyz. Ed was a former Golden Gloves boxer, nick named Fast Eddie, who boxed in the Navy during World War II. Eddie was part of the original family who built and owned the original White Lake IGA Grocery Store on Ormond Road. In the 1960’s, Ed was the White Lake Township Supervisor and served on the Oakland County Board of Supervisors. During this time, White Lake Township was quickly transitioning from a summer resort area to year round homes. Ed was involved in the many changes to adapt to the new needs of the area such as paving roads and adequate business expansion. Ed served as a campaign chairperson for John F. Kennedy’s election and was selected as the Oakland County representative to place a wreath on the grave of JFK. Later in his government career, he was the Oakland County Deputy Drain Commissioner. Realizing a long held dream, Ed built and became co-owner of King’s Court, a popular restaurant in Waterford. In his years before retirement, Ed was a commercial realtor. An active community volunteer throughout his lifetime, Ed received many honors for his contributions. He served on the first committee to establish a hospital in West Oakland County, which paved the way for Huron Valley Hospital. In 1978, he was instrumental in helping to establish the first ever high school horsemanship team. Today, over 328 high schools are part of the statewide Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association. In the same time period, Eddie successfully advocated for high school girls sports and opportunities for girls to receive varsity letters. At the time, only boys could receive varsity letters and it was an uphill battle for any support of a girls’ sports program. And, he helped to establish the first high school ski team in the Huron Valley School District. In later years, Ed enjoyed organizing golf events for the Christian Businessmen’s Association. Even as he faced dementia, Eddie had a positive outlook and enjoyed his days to the fullest. He especially enjoyed family gatherings, parties with dancing, Bocce ball, and golf. The family is grateful to all those who helped to provide loving care to him over the years. Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 2, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at the Riverside Chapel, Simpson-Modetz Funeral Home, 5630 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford.
