Paint Creek Trail Hosts 10th Annual Labor Day Bridge Walk & Run

Community Members Come Together to “Get Michigan Moving”

Can’t make it to Mackinac for the annual Labor Day Bridge Walk this year? The Paint Creek Trailways Commission and Friends of the Paint Creek Trail are offering all community members a chance to participate in a Labor Day Community Walk right in their own backyard.

The Paint Creek Trailways Commission and Friends of the Paint Creek Trail are organizing the 10th Annual Paint Creek Trail Labor Day Virtual Bridge Walk and Run on Monday, September 7, at the Rochester Municipal Park Kiwanis Pavilion. This event is part of the Labor Day Community Walks that are held throughout the state in conjunction with the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Walk.

Two options are being offered to participants – a 2-mile roundtrip walk to Tienken road, or a 10K-roundtrip walk or run to Silver Bell road in Oakland Township on the Paint Creek Trail. Onsite registration begins at 8 a.m., and the event starts at 9 a.m. It is a free community event, with a suggested donation of $5.00 per family for development of an educational side path. For more information, including online registration, visit www.PaintCreekTrailFriends.org.

“This is one of our most popular and fun events of the year.  It’s a chance for friends and families to enjoy the beauty of the trail and start the new school year or the fall season with a little exercise. The Paint Creek Trail is a great, available, and free nature resource in our communities, and it’s easy to incorporate physical activity in your daily routine. In addition, as part of the virtual Mackinac experience, we will have fudge samples sponsored by Back to the Beach Runners available as everyone returns to the pavilion,” said Trail Manager Kristen Myers. The Friends of the Paint Creek Trail will be on hand with free trail information and freebies. “The Friends group has been working hard to make improvements to the trail with new bike fixit stations, and a planned educational pathway. In honor of our 10th Bridge Walk, we’ll have some fun freebies to choose from for all participants,” said Jim VanDoorn, Friends of the Paint Creek Trail Board President. Zale Group Wealth Management will provide water to all participants as well.

The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports and the Michigan Fitness Foundation have endorsed the Paint Creek Trail Labor Day Virtual Bridge Walk and Run as a quality physical activity event through the Pure Michigan FITness Series endorsement program. The Pure Michigan FITness Series program endorses local, regional and statewide events that are consistent with the Governor’s Council and the Michigan Fitness Foundation mission to promote healthy choices while offering a physical activity event that is open to all participants, regardless of skill level or age. The Paint Creek Trail event leads by example in providing a safe, healthy physical activity event for Michigan residents. Participants this year are eligible to enter the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run Lottery for 2016.

“By endorsing local events, we have the opportunity to highlight the positive impact of incorporating physical activity into your daily life,” says Mike Maisner, Vice President of Active Communities. “Pure Michigan FITness events promote physical activity for individuals and communities while providing a fun way for us all to get moving.”
