Rochester Poets’ Society presents this year’s event on Friday, July 17, at 7:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Pavilion in the Rochester Municipal Park. Stop by for a few minutes or bring a lawn chair for a comfortable evening—event runs until dusk. Open mic will be available—time permitting—after the scheduled poets read.

Poets Reading this Year

Being a Poet

“When a feeling, a thought, or an experience cannot be expressed adequately in prose, this is where poetry begins. The poet uses words in the most concise, compact manner he or she can to re-create an experience in the reader or audience. As well, he or she uses various figures of speech, and various rhythms. Then the poet chooses a formal or informal form to suit the subject. The poem may rhyme or not. The poem may have a regular beat or not. Poetry is not defined by its use of beautiful, flowery words, or by teaching a moral lesson.” ~Rochester Poets

The group meets to improve their writing and to create a greater awareness in the community of the Art of Poetry. They do this with public readings in the Rochester Community, the Hermitage Gallery on Main Street, the Library, and Poetry in the Park.

Rochester Poets meets on the third Thursday of each month from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Rochester Hills Public Library in the Second Floor Conference Room.
