Two Friday events and a full month of art celebrate Black History month in Pontiac. The February show brings an artist in from Atlanta, GA and Yaktown Poets stop by for a variety show mid-month.
Black History Month gets underway at the Pontiac Creative Art Center this Friday, February 5, for an art opening from Pontiac native Steven M. Tette S. The month-long show, Beneath the Façade, opens with a reception from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday. The show runs until March 5.

From the Artist
“I am a Michigan native who joined the Army at the age of seventeen. Returning home after serving many years I entered the university system where I realized my life’s calling, and eventually obtaining a Master degree in art education. However, it was painting in oils that emerged as my true passion, and means of self-expression. I am an American Realist, who employs oil paint on a large scale. I recreate human form, texture, and light to deliver the contemporary African-American experience. I consider myself nothing less than a chronicler of the African-American condition, for better or worse. When you see my paintings, I think you’ll agree.”
Yaktown Poets Revue – Valentine Edition
The Friday before Valentine’s Day, will bring a seasonal night of the spoken word for the over 21 crowd to the stage of the Pontiac Creative Art Center. Yaktown poets were formed in August of 2014 when its founder, VB Touray, released a call for interested poets on her Facebook page. The call went out for poets in and around “Yaktown” who may be interested in forming a group to perform their poetic creation for the Pontiac Community. Each year, Yaktown Poets come together for an evening of spoken word, live music, dancing, vocal performances, boutique shopping, food, and drink. “Don’t miss it – you’ll be kicking yourself if you do,” said Founder, VB Touray.
