The Rochester Garden Club is initiating a scholarship program for graduating 8th graders in the Rochester Community Schools. Working in partnership with the 4-H organization, the club awarded a full scholarship to a local student who will attend the 4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp on the shores of Lake Huron for one week in August.
The camp increases appreciation and enjoyment of nature, science and ecology. It fosters scientifically rooted knowledge of the environment and builds self-confidence and leadership skills. “We are so happy to work with the people of 4-H to give deserving students a chance to experience this fantastic program,” said Marilee Shortreed, Rochester Garden Club President. “Next year we hope to expand this scholarship to include a student from each of the four Rochester middle schools.” This year’s winner is Chloe Schultz, an excellent student from West Middle School who loves science and nature. Chloe’s goal is to become an astrophysicist. Perhaps this summer camp will help her on her way.
