Rochester Hills Public Library Launches Summer Reading Program
Rochester Hills Public Library is combining brain health with physical health during its summer reading program Read For The Win. The program challenges participants to read quality literature and to stay physically active through a series of programs stating June 11.
To kick off the program the Rochester Hills Public Library is hosting a community party June 11 from 12 noon – 3:00 p.m. There will be a rock wall set up for kids (and adults), a mini golf course will run through the library and attendees can cool off with a free slushy from Kona Ice, while enjoying the music of Randy Kaplan at 2:00 p.m.
“The kickoff party is a fun way to increase awareness of Read For The Win and encourage people to get involved, while highlighting its importance. Our summer reading program is designed to help forestall the ‘summer slide’ in reading some students experience during the school break,” said Library Director Christine Lind Hage.
Kids aren’t the only ones who benefit from Read For The Win. The program has activities for all ages and is offering prizes like a Fitbit to encourage participants to meet their goals.
“The benefits of reading in adulthood are sometimes overlooked. Read For The Win is our opportunity to remind adults that reading is just as important for your brain health as exercise is to your physical health,” said Adult Services Manager Jessica Parji.
The library offers a wide variety of book clubs including one at Spencer Beach June 24, and a Walk and Talk the second Monday of each month.
During Walk and Talk participants will stroll along the Clinton River Trail while discussing the books they’re reading. The library will be keeping track of how far participants collectively travel on a map in the library.
Read For The Win runs from June 11 through August 6. More information on Read For The Win and its activities can be found at www.RHPL.org
