With no help from Michigan, the GOP surpasses the magic number of 51 to gain a majority in the Senate. While many republicans across the country faired well in this midterm election, Michigan’s Terry Lynn Land did not. Democrat candidate, Gary Peters, won convincingly with 56% of the vote in Oakland County. However, the race was closer in Rochester with a 5% win and even closer in Rochester Hills where Peters won by less than 3%. In Oakland Township, Land took 62% and Peters only 34%. Nevertheless, overall numbers are the ones that count. “Not too long ago, I had a call from Ms. Land, who conceded the race,” Peters said to a crowd of supporters, “And I will say, she has served us well as a secretary of state and I’m sure she will continue to be active in public service.”

Along with taking control of the Senate, Republicans pick up at least 10 seats in the US House of Representatives – where they already had the majority – putting them in control of both houses of congress.

Snyder and Friends Keep it Republican

Governor Rick Snyder wins re-election over opponent Mark Schauer for a second term for the state’s top office. Attorney General Bill Schuette beats Mark Totten and Ruth Johnson wins over Godfrey Dillard. All three Republicans won over second place Democrats. Further down in numbers put the Libertarian Candidates in the number three place.

Also doing well were the Republicans who ran for the State Board of Educations, Michigan State University Board of Trustees, University of Michigan Board of Governors and the Wayne State University Board of Governors.

Local Republicans do Well too

Michael Webber, Mike Bishop, Marty Knollenberg and Robert Gosselin all finished well in this election. Oakland County had a 48% voter turnout this round.

The Proposals

Rochester Hills voted to increase taxes for funding the fire departments, as well as Oakland Township renewed their millage for fire department operations.

Both statewide proposals regarding wolf hunting were turned down.
