Road Commission Snow Update January 12, 2011

RCOC snow efforts started yesterday morning with anti-icing (spraying liquid brine on roads) in anticipation of the snow. This helps to delay the formation of ice when the snow falls.

We then had our full contingent of trucks out salting once the snow started and through the evening rush hour. At about 7 p.m., we reduced the fleet to about 50 trucks, so many of our drivers could get some rest while we continued to clean up the roads during the over-night hours.

At 2 a.m., we increased the fleet on the roads to about 84 (all available drivers) to prepare for the morning rush hour. Then, by about 7:30 a.m., we were able to bring back in some more drivers, increasing our fleet to close to 106 trucks on the road (not counting the trucks that broke down). We expect to continue at this level until about 6 p.m. tonight, which should ensure that roads are in good shape for evening rush hour today.
