Rochester AAUW 2011 Women’s History Month Eighth Grade Essay Contest Winners

The March meeting of the Rochester branch of the American Association of University Women featured the winners of their annual Woman’s History Month Eighth Grade Essay Contest. The first place winner was Sofia Pokrzywa of Van Hoosen Middle School for her essay about her piano teacher, Mrs. Gurin. The second place winner was Amanda Hudak from Reuther Middle School for her essay about her PRIDE team leader Mrs. Fortress. The winner of third place was Sophia Dancel from Van Hoosen Middle School for her essay about Mrs. Melia, her piano teacher. Nevin Mital from West Middle School was the Kathy Watson Memorial award winner for his essay about his mother, Nishma Mital. Honoable mention awards went to Allison Zweng from West Middle School for her essay about the influence of  Marie Curie, Jenny Liu for her essay about her teacher Mrs. Kautz and Alexander Staitsiadis for his essay about his sister Jessica. Jenny and Alexander are students at Van Hoosen Middle School.

Kricket Hoeskstra, teen librarian from the Rochester Hills Public Library shared the paths her life has taken with inspiration from her mother and her favorite book Harriet the Spy. Pat Hemingray, teen librarian from the Auburn Hills Public library shared stories about the influence of her English grandmother.

There were a total of 51 essays submitted from students in the Avondale school district, Reuther Middle School, West Middle School and Van Hoosen Middle school from the Rochester school district; and St. John’s Lutheran school.

The Women’s History Month Eighth Grade Essay Contest is sponsored by the Rochester branch of the AAUW, the Auburn Hills Public Library and the Rochester Hills Public Library.
