The top eight teams in the state qualify for the opportunity to compete for the State Title in Division 1, hosted at the Deltaplex, starting at 6:00 p.m. This is the first time in 20 years that the Adams Highlanders Cheer Team will travel to compete in MHSAA state finals.

“As a coach, there is not much more you can ask for in a team. This team has had one goal (to make it to states) and have never let up all season. They are hard working, determined, and most importantly, great teammates that build trust in one another. This team has been special from the beginning and I know that together they can accomplish anything they put their minds to,” said Brooke Miller, Adams Varsity Coach, “State finals is filled with the most elite teams in the state. All eight teams have what it takes to win but the great thing about it is that it can be anyone’s day. Adams will put our best out on the mat and hope to have our best day yet. Can’t wait to see this team take the floor at state finals for the first time.”

This is Rochester Adams third state final appearance. The Highlanders placed third in 1997 and finished as a runner up in 1996. “Due to the concentration of strong competitive cheer programs in the metro area, it is always a difficult road to advance from the regional round onto the state finals. This accomplishment is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our cheerleaders and coaches from all three schools who will be competing in the state finals together for the first time,” said Rochester Adams High School Athletic Director Jason Rapp.

“This year, our team is so driven to succeed. To have our hard work finally pay off our senior year, is an incredible feeling. It’s a very exciting time for our team,” said Emily Burgin, Varsity Cheerleader and Senior at Adams High School, “We’re really looking forward to giving it all we have on Friday.”

The Stoney Creek Cougars have qualified for the state competition nine times in the past 10 years. The Cougars won the state championship in 2010. “To have all three Rochester teams qualify for states certainly is a source of pride, not only for Stoney Creek, but for the district,” said Stoney Creek High School Athletic Director Rick Jakacki.

Rochester High School has competed in the state finals 29 times, earning 18 state championship titles and placing as a runner up on seven occasions. “We are honored to compete alongside our fellow Rochester schools and represent our tremendous community at the state competition. We wish both Stoney Creek and Adams the best of luck on Friday,” said Rochester High School Athletic Director Luke Beach.

The Rochester Falcons’ Cheer Team was undefeated last season and is looking for their 19th state championship. “We celebrate excellence across the district through academics, the arts, and athletics. Our varsity cheer teams and coaches have worked hard perfecting their sport and we wish them the best of luck on Friday,” said Superintendent Robert Shaner, Ph.D.

  1. Its very exciting that all 3 teams made it to state finals, and would have been nice to have all three teams equally represented in this article….focus was all on Adams and Rochester.
