Join the Rochester-Avon Historical Society (RAHS) on Thursday, August 8 at 6:30 p.m. for a summer historical walking tour.
Thousands of people drive over the South Hill Bridge into downtown Rochester daily, but did you know that almost immediately under the bridge exists remains of the failed 1830s Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal?
Or that it was once the site of a paper mill that was burned down in the 1870s by a woman who claimed to be having “crazy spells?” Also, there is documented evidence that a local Ojibwe tribe once held mysterious ceremonial dances along the nearby river.
Hear these stories and more as we explore Rochester “under the bridge” with RAHS historical guide Chris Brown. We’ll meet at the Diversion Street parking lot “under the bridge” where the Clinton River Trail crosses Diversion Street.
This event is free for RAHS members. Nonmembers are asked to consider a $5 donation at the start of the tour. Registration is required and can be done online at www.RochesterAvonHistoricalSociety.org, or by email to rahsupdates@gmail.com. Or you can call 248-266-5440 and leave a message.
