Rochester-Avon Historical Society presents “Daughter of the Union: The Story of Eunice Tripler” on October 1

The Rochester-Avon Historical Society (RAHS) will welcome author and Civil War historian Jack Dempsey on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at noon at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm. Dempsey will discuss his latest book, Heart in Tatters: Eunice Hunt Tripler and the Civil War, a memoir and story of Eunice Tripler.

Author and Civil War historian Jack Dempsey

Eunice (nee Hunt) descended from patriots of the American Revolution and War of 1812. She married U.S. Army surgeon Charles Tripler and became his confidant, aide, and partner until his premature death in 1866. Eunice spent the long remainder of her life advocating for his legacy. In 2022, the Michigan Civil War Association republished her memoir with emphasis on contributions Eunice and her husband made to save the Union. Dempsey will illuminate the poignant life of this American patriot.

A graduate of James Madison College at Michigan State University and George Washington University’s National Law Center, Dempsey first became fascinated by the Civil War in the third grade. He served as chairman of Michigan’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee and Vice-President and President of the Michigan Historical Commission between 2007-2018. He is a member of the Michigan World War I Centennial Commission and served on the boards of several heritage-focused nonprofit organizations. Heart in Tatters is Dempsey’s seventh publication.

Bring lunch, refreshments, and a friend.
