Rochester Challenges Volunteers to Create 1,000 Blankets for Hospitalized Children

Michigan’s largest provider of comfort care to hospitalized children, Fleece & Thank You (F&TY), is pleased to announce the return of in-person blanket-making events. They will host the first of those events with Make A Blanket Day Rochester at Stoney Creek High School (6755 Sheldon Rd. in Rochester Hills) from 12 noon to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 16. This event, which aims to make 1,000 fleece-tie blankets with video messages of support to comfort children facing extended stays in hospitals across Michigan, is open to the public by either attending the event in person to make blankets or to make blankets at home with other supporters. Community members and groups from Rochester and the surrounding area are invited to attend.

“We are grateful to Chief Financial for its continuing support of our organization and mission of providing blankets to the 30,000 children who every year face extended hospital stays,” said Nicholas Kristock, founder and executive director of Fleece & Thank You. “This Make A Blanket Day event will be the first time that volunteers, participants and the Fleece & Thank You team will come together in person to make a large quantity of blankets in a matter of only a few hours, and we are honored to do so with Chief Financial, the Rochester community and residents from in and around the area by our side. The blankets made here are certain to bring comfort to young recipients.”

Make a Blanket Day participants will come together at the high school’s courtyard near the practice soccer field to make the blankets. Those interested in participating, but from the comfort of their own home, can pick up a Blanket Kit at the bus loop and then drop off their completed blanket at the same location on Saturday, October 23, anytime between 12 noon and 2:00 p.m.

Those unable to attend the event but want to support the effort have a few options. They can pick up any remaining blanket kits that may be available at Chief Financial Credit Union-Rochester Hills beginning October 18, then drop off blankets there once they’re completed. Alternatively, they can purchase a blanket kit online that ships directly to their home.

Every $25 donated goes toward the making of one blanket. Fleece & Thank You blanket kits are much more than just the fleece. Each blanket kit is an inspirational experience for the sick child, paid forward by participants and made by their hands.
