A primary mission of the Rochester Garden Club is to promote environmental education in our community, and every year we award college scholarships in support of that goal. This year, two students each received a $1500 scholarship in support of their studies in horticulture or environmental studies. The club members take great pride and joy in helping these students pursue their goals. This year the scholarship winners are Kelly Dunn from Rochester High School and Mena Nasiri from Rochester Adams High School.
Kelly is majoring in Environmental Studies and Sustainability at Michigan State University and upon graduating would like to work for either the public or private sectors as an Environmental Specialist or a Policy Analyst. Kelly’s love of nature and plants was nurtured in her grandmother’s garden when she was a little girl. Her teacher in AP Environmental Science, Mr. Shurter, encouraged her interests in this field. She is passionate about helping our environment.
Mena is attending the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering and is interested in ultimately pursuing a PhD in either environmental, biomechanical or mechanical engineering. She has shown strong leadership skills through her high school years and is committed to using her talents to better our world.
Funds for these college scholarships and all the other charitable donations made by the Rochester Garden Club are from the annual Gifts and Greens Market, a Rochester holiday tradition for over 70 years. This year the market will be held at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church on Walton Blvd.
