Rochester Garden Club Funds Two College Scholarships

Both Zackary Bosanac and Sarah DeGrendel have a lot in common. Each is a high school senior, graduating from Stoney Creek High School with strong academic accomplishments, and each is passionate about working in the environmental field when graduating from college. Every year, the Rochester Garden Club works in concert with the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester to fund scholarships for students who will be studying in environmental or horticultural fields. “These are just the sort of students we like to support,” said Susan Gerrits, chair of the Education Committee of the Rochester Garden Club. “Our club is dedicated to promoting environmental education and we hope that our scholarship award of $1500 will help them reach their goals.”

Zackary will be studying environmental science at Lyman Briggs College of Michigan State University. A big influence on his decision to go into the field was his AP Science teacher, Mr. Don Wilson. Zack loves the life sciences and understands the environmental pressures facing future generations. He wants to use his skills to help devise solutions to these challenges.

Sarah will be studying marine biology at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. Her enthusiasm for this field was kindled by a summer internship at the Saba National Marine Park where she assisted in reef building, coral nurseries and microalgae farming. She hopes to use her skills to help mitigate the damage of climate change and plastics pollution in the oceans so she can contribute her part to sustaining life on earth.

The Rochester Garden Club funds these scholarships with the profits from two annual fund-raising events. The Rochester Garden Walk is held this year on June 20, and the Gifts and Greens Market on December 5, 6, and 7. This annual event is a pop-up holiday market featuring hand-made arrangements, fresh greens, baked goods and unique gifts. It will be held at the Rochester Administration Building.
