Rochester Hills Celebrates Home Fire Sprinkler Week

The Rochester Hills Fire Department was recently awarded a $500 stipend from the national nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) to host this event. Fire departments across the country will conduct similar events during the week.

“We are honored to have been selected for this generous stipend,” said Assistant Chief William Cooke, who oversees the Community Risk Reduction Division of the Rochester Hills Fire Department. “Using the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition’s educational materials, we will raise awareness of how quickly a home fire can become deadly without the life-saving impact of home fire sprinklers.” We encourage members of the community, as well as elected officials to attend this event to see the benefits of home fire sprinklers.

According to HFSC

  • The risk of dying in a home fire decreases by about 85 percent if sprinklers are present.
  • When sprinklers were present, fires were kept to the room of origin 97 percent of the time.
  • In the event of a fire, typically, only the sprinkler closest to the fire will activate, spraying water directly on the fire, leaving the rest of the house dry and secure. Roughly 89 percent of the time just one sprinkler operates.
