Rochester Hills Hosts Second Saturday Green Space Hikes

The Rochester Hills Green Space Advisory Board (GSAB) will be welcoming the community to join them for the first ever Second Saturday Green Space Hikes, scheduled for June through October.

These one-hour hikes will be a great opportunity to enjoy the captivating scenery while learning about what makes each Green Space unique. Thanks to the Green Space millage fund, the featured land will be protected, maintained, and made more pedestrian accessible.

Rochester Hills Hosts Second Saturday Green Space Hikes

GSAB members will be present to answer any questions and share information regarding the preservation of undeveloped and protected green spaces. Closed-toe shoes, long pants with socks and bug spray are recommended.

Hikers will meet at City Hall in the visitor parking lot at 10:00 a.m. to caravan to the properties. City Hall is located at 1000 Rochester Hills Drive.

The schedule this summer includes:

June 9 – 1380 Ruby Ave (west of Livernois) – This almost 10 acre Green Space is home to woodlands, prairie, wetlands and a variety of wildlife. Explore the first preserved Green Space in the southern portion of the city.

July 14 – Cloverport/Childress – These two Green Spaces, located west of Rochester Road “on the hill,” together join to cover over 12 acres of diverse topography and habitats. These are highly wooded parcels, with steep slopes, wetlands and Clinton River frontage.

August 11 – White Green Space – This 48 acres of expansive wooded land is located on the north side of the Clinton River and the city’s newest park, Innovation Hills.  This is the largest single piece of preserved Green Space in the city and has expansive forest and riverfront features to explore.

September 8 – Harding Green Space – Over 26 acres of land located between Harding Avenue and the Clinton River Trail east of Livernois, this Green Space is also accessible by the Clinton River Trail. This unique and beautiful property features water, scenic bluffs and preserved woodlands to explore.

October 13 – 1380 Ruby Ave (west of Livernois) – Come back again for one more Green Space hike, to see how the restoration of this property has flourished over the summer, and enjoy some fall color as well.

All hikes are free, but registration is required. To register for this event or to learn about all they do, visit their website for Outdoor Engagement Opportunities, or call the Parks & Natural Resources Department 248-656-4673.

Because the green spaces are undeveloped, these hikes are not suitable for strollers and are not handicapped accessible at this time. Dogs and bikes are not permitted for these hikes.
