For the first time in its history, the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm will star in its own new documentary titled On Van Hoosen Farm on Wednesday, November 16, at 7:00 p.m.

On Van Hoosen Farm, an original production of Detroit PBS, explores how five generations of Taylors and Van Hoosens raised their families and worked the land. Residents and history lovers are invited to a special world premiere with guest speaker and Emmy Award-winning producer, Oliver Thorton.

When Lemuel and Sarah Taylor purchased 160 acres of rolling farm land nearly 200 years ago in what is now Rochester Hills, a family legacy was born. The Taylors and their nine children settled into a life of farming the fertile Michigan soil where their work would eventually impact generations.

Viewers will meet the Van Hoosen women including Dr. Sarah Van Hoosen Jones, a pioneer in animal genetics, and Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen, a physician, author and advocate who overcame discrimination in a 19th Century world. The work of the Van Hoosens has positively influenced a diverse range of fields including animal husbandry, medicine, progressive agriculture, and scientific pursuits.

“This PBS movie provides the Museum with another chance to tell the fascinating story about our community,” states Museum Director Pat McKay. “Our history is about people, about their impact on a community, and about leadership and innovation. At the heart of our story are the Taylor and Van Hoosen Families, whose stories took place over five generations. It is one of our great American stories and it happened right here in Rochester Hills.”

The premiere will be held at the Emagine Theatre complete with a red carpet welcome and post screening reception. Tickets to On Van Hoosen Farm are available at rochesterhills.org/musdonate. The event is expected to sell out quickly.
