History in Your Backyard Tours: Rochester Water Works, Saturday, October 1 at 10:00 a.m.
Join Cory Bendick, water foreman for the City of Rochester for a tour of Rochester Water Works at 1625 North Livernois, ½ mile north of Tienken Road to find out where Rochester has received its fresh water since an 1894 bond issue was passed for a central water system. Secluded on a spectacular piece of property 2 miles north of Rochester, this water system originally had several sixty foot wells, six miles of pipe, and a 124,000 gallon tank for storage. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable, casual shoes as the walking is through several buildings and some uneven ground.
The Presidential Election of 1860, Thursday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m.
Erin Dwyer from Oakland University will discuss Abraham Lincoln’s presidential campaign – a divisive campaign involving four candidates and Lincoln’s road to national attention and the nomination, the election itself, and why Lincoln’s election led directly to Civil War.
Erin Dwyer earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from Harvard University in 2012. After graduating she taught at Tulane University in New Orleans for two years before accepting a tenure-track position at Oakland University, where she specializes in 19th-century American history, particularly the history of slavery and the Civil War. She recently completed her first book manuscript, Mastering Emotions, which is under contract with the University of Pennsylvania Press.
