Rochester Hills, Michigan – Recyclebank gets to the root of what it means to “live a green life” through its latest initiative, the Green Schools Program. Rochester Hills was the first city to offer the recycling program in the state, and now they celebrate another first. Hamlin Elementary and Brooklands Elementary have been selected as the first schools in Michigan to receive a grant that will allow them to bring their schools environmental projects to life.
“Through our partnership with Recyclebank, we have an ideal opportunity to help educate people on the importance of recycling and protecting our environment,” states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett.
The program allows elementary schools in Recyclebank communities to apply for funding to implement a school project that focuses on educating and motivating students to live a greener lifestyle.
“We want students to learn that they can have an impact on our environment, we want them to learn about recycling, composting, and that trees help us to keep our environment healthy,” states Gary Cornish, Principal of Hamlin Elementary.
Hamlin Elementary’s Green School project includes the development of an outdoor teaching and weather station, and the seedling project where children will plant a seedling tree on Earth Day in third grade and harvest it to transplant on Earth Day in fifth grade. Brooklands Elementary will build a Michigan garden in the coming spring.
“With the points generated from our residents recycling and donating to their respective programs, these two Rochester Community Schools will receive over $4,000 next month to further environmental responsibility among their students, and all for just taking out the trash” states Barnett.
