Rochester Hills Selected for Community Risk Assessment Pilot

Innovative Approach to Risk Reduction

The City of Rochester Hills Fire Department was recently selected to participate in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Community Risk Assessment (CRA) Pilot Project. Only 250 U.S. Fire Departments were selected to participate in this pilot program, with only five chosen in Michigan.

CRA Dashboards are designed to assess the unique risks for emergencies in Rochester Hills. Powered by mySidewalk, it will allow the fire department to assist in analyzing incident data and make risk reduction decisions based on data rather than based on assumptions. This data will also allow the  CRR Division to determine what public education services are best to improve the community’s safety.

“This new program is a great example of how our team is constantly looking for new ways to improve city services,” states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. “Initiatives like this are one of the many reasons our fire department is ranked one of the best in Michigan.”

This pilot program is a key component in achieving the department’s goal outlined in their strategic plan. This technology is interactive, mobile friendly, and ADA compliant. It will also allow the Fire Department to share their Community Risk Assessments with local officials and city administration. Assistant Chief William Cooke will lead this pilot program for the City.

“The Rochester Hills Fire Department is extremely fortunate to be part of this Community Risk Assessment Project in cooperation with the National Fire Protection Agency,” states Cooke. “Driven by our community’s data, current and future staff members will now have essential tools to help guide us in making good fire and life safety decisions for our community.  We are excited to work through the process and to be able to validate our direction.”
