For over 17 years, young people in Rochester Hills have been sitting on the Council dais sharing their experiences and getting an up close look at local government. The 15 students on the youth council represent each City Council district and are currently in grades 9th – 12th.

“Youth Council has helped me better understand my community and how much goes on in the background to make our great city the way that it is. I have met a plethora of people through being part of this council and it has inspired me to work harder,” said Youth Council member Dana William. “I encourage everyone to apply because it is truly a great opportunity to become more a part of your community and learn how the city council operates. You meet so many new friends in your own age group and so many others throughout your volunteering experiences.”

Youth council members regularly engage with city officials, council members, and the Mayor’s Office during their time in the organization. In addition, they meet regularly to exchange ideas and coordinate community events. Youth Council members have coordinated cultural programs, 5k runs, and fundraisers for local nonprofits.

“Providing opportunities for our young people to get involved in public policy and community events benefits both our students and our community as a whole,” said Council President Ryan Deel. “We are proud of the work of our youth council, and look forward to welcoming our newest members.”

Youth members serve for one -year terms with the opportunity for reappointment. Terms run concurrent with the school year: September 1 through August 31. Applicants must live in Rochester Hills and be enrolled in high school for the 2021-2022 school year to be eligible.

Students may apply and fill out their application, details available on the Youth Council Page of the city’s website. The deadline to submit an application will be Wednesday, May 19th, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. For additional information, please contact Youth Council Liaison Sheila Brown at [email protected].
