Romance and Art Combine at Rochester Hills Public Library Event

Both are famous Mexican artists, Rivera is recognized for his encompassing political murals and Kahlo for her captivating small-scale pieces. While being so different, their art shared many fine characteristics from their desire for revolution, their dedication to Mexico and their passion for each other. This event focuses on their dramatic, adoring and turbulent relationship and the art that came from it.

“True romantics love Kahlo and Rivera because their love for each other spilled into everything they touched,” says Evans. “This Valentine’s Day, I hope to give a new lens for couples to see themselves through; much like Kahlo and Rivera did.”

English native, Wendy Evans is a current Art History teacher at Wayne State University. She has received the United Way Community Services Heart of Gold Award, the DIA Volunteer Council Distinguished Service Award, the 2014 Birmingham-Bloomfield Cultural Arts Award and the 2015 Esteemed Women of Michigan award from the Burnstein Community Clinic. She is known to many for her art knowledge and volunteer work at the DIA, but also is known for her English accent and crazy socks.

“As a newlywed, I want my first Valentine’s Day with my husband to be memorable,” says Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley. “An evening of art and the story of romance will shake up the traditional dinner and a movie with a little Latin spice.”

Registration is available online for this event at calendar.rhpl.org. Sign up in advance as space will be limited.
