Walking ten miles each day through the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula observing the nesting habits of birds of prey is Rochester Hills student, Kevin King’s idea of bliss. As a small boy, Kevin always knew he wanted to work with wildlife in its natural habitat. When he began to apply to universities to make his dream come true, Kevin discovered a scholarship program funded by the Rochester Garden Club, a branch of the Woman’s’ National Farm and Garden Association. Because his college major and career goals met the criteria for the scholarship, the club was pleased to help him reach his dreams. He enrolled at Michigan Technological University and majored in wildlife ecology where he has excelled in his studies.
Kevin received financial support over the four years of his studies at Michigan Tech. His scholarship gave him more time to concentrate on his studies, and participate in clubs and programs in his field. He is now enrolled in a seasonal law enforcement training program which is a stepping stone to employment with the National Park Service.
Rochester Garden Club is pleased to offer scholarships to students like Kevin. Students interested in careers that enhance our understanding of the natural world, such as Ecology, Botany, and Horticulture could qualify for similar financial support. High school students in the Rochester area should contact their counselors, or the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester for information.
