State Sen. Marty Knollenberg, R-Troy, issued the following statement Wednesday morning regarding voters rejecting Proposal 1:
“There are three lessons to be learned from the Proposal 1 vote. First, citizens expect their elected officials to lead, not to punt difficult issues to the ballot box.
“Second, before increasing taxes, the Legislature must further cut spending and more carefully spend the money it already has.
“Third-and most important-100 percent of any tax increase for roads must actually go toward fixing the roads.
“Since becoming a state senator on January 1, I’ve had discussions with my colleagues and other reformers in search of options for a real, long-term solution to our crumbling infrastructure. With the failure of Proposal 1, everything is up for consideration and no item is off the table.
“These discussions are ongoing as we continue to seek a viable plan that will pass the Senate and the House and be signed into law by the governor.”
