Rochester Hills Public Library (RHPL) will feature an author talk with award-winning local writer Esperanza Cintrón on Saturday, September 19 at 2:00 p.m. on Zoom. Cintrón will read selections from her book, Shades: Detroit Love Stories, and participate in a Q/A with Rochester Writer’s founder, Michael Dwyer.
Shades: Detroit Love Stories is a collection of interconnected short stories that are distinctly Detroit. Each interconnected story examines the obstacles an individual faces and the choices he or she makes to cope and, hopefully, survive in the changing urban landscape. The book was published by Wayne State University Press in 2019. Cintrón has also published three books of poetry: Visions of a Post-Apocalyptic Sunrise, What Keeps Me Sane, and Chocolate City Latina.
Her poetry has been anthologized in Manteca! An Anthology of Afro-Latin@ Poets, Of Burgers & Barrooms, Abandoned Automobile, Double Stitch: Black Women Write About Mothers & Daughters, Erotique Noire/Black Erotica and others. She has been awarded a Michigan Council for the Arts Individual Artist Grant, the Metro Times Poetry Prize, Callaloo Creative Writing Fellowships at Oxford and Brown Universities, and a National Endowment for the Humanities scholarship.
A native Detroiter, Cintrón is co-founder of The Sisters of Color Writers Collective and creator of its literary journal Seeds for which she served as editor until 2006. She holds a doctorate in English Literature and teaches writing, film, and literature at a college in Downtown Detroit.
