Shakespeare in the Park
Full Impact Theater returns to the Rochester for the Second Annual Shakespeare in the Park. The Two Gentlemen of Verona is one of Shakespeare’s first comedies; and will be portrayed in a colorful, open-air stage set in a big-top circus-style environment.
This event is rain or shine. Bring your own blanket (or stadium-style-seat). Suitable for all ages, the play is this weekend only, August 2-4, 2013 at the Rochester Municipal Park.
The Plot
Two men, Valentine and Proteus, seek travel, adventure, and love. However, nothing complicates a friendship like a little romantic competition. Having decided to leave Verona to seek his fortune in Milan, Valentine takes leave of his friend Proteus, who prefers to stay at home and woo his lover, Julia.
Ordered by his father to follow Valentine, Proteus does so after swearing an oath of allegiance to Julia. In Milan, Valentine falls in love with Silvia, daughter of the Duke, and plans to elope with her. Once Proteus arrives in Milan and sets his eyes on Silvia, he too is besotted, forgetting his friendship to Valentine and his oath to Julia.
Tagging along in these complications of love, betrayal, loyalty, and disguised identities are clown scenes with Launce and Speed, Launce’s dog Crab (a real dog), outlaws, musicians, ladies in waiting, a duke, and other love interests – all with clever wordplay.
