Yates Cider Mill Opens this Friday!
It’s true; Yates will open for a special spring pressing. The Rochester landmark is taking advantage of last year’s good harvest. They purchased apples from last season that were in cold storage to press into cider. The mill will be open for “10 days only,” states Katie Titus, owner.
Originally, the mill was going to open for two weekends only in April to do the spring pressing. However, when word spread through the community with vigor, they decided to go the full 10 days, weekend to weekend. Katie says “come,” this will be your one shot at fresh local cider until at least August.
Now is the time to pick up a gallon or two of Yates UV treated cider. They switched over from heat pasteurization last year to Ultraviolet Light Treating. While Yates cider was always good, it’s now better. UV treatment is just as safe for you as pasteurization, but maintains more flavor and color.
Top that with Ice Cream
The special 10 days of cider welcomes back the Yates Ice Cream Shoppe for summer. So, after the 10 days are up, area residents will have the walk-up ice cream windows to tide them over until the fall harvest begins.
Katie predicts an early season this year because of the early warm weather. They could open by the first of August, but “always by Labor Day.” There is a chance of frost damage and no one can call the weather for the year, so cider-lovers should keep their fingers crossed just in case.
Along with the cider, apples, donuts and small baked goods will be available during the special 10 days. They open Friday, April 13 and close Sunday, April 22, 2012. Monday through Saturday hours will be from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Sunday hours will be from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
