In 2012, the Oakland Township Historic District Commission held its first square dance. It was a success. They now offer two per year, usually the third weekend in June and the second weekend in September, most often on a Saturday evening. Their next event is this Saturday, September 12, at Cranberry Lake Farm.
A picnic is planned from 6 – 7 p.m. and then it’s time to put on those dancing shoes. The picnic is a bring-your-own-food event—tents will be set up—bring a picnic dinner or get carry out to make it easier.
Glen Morningstar will begin calling to the live music at 7 p.m. for good, old-fashioned Square and Contra dancing. The Ruffwater Stringband will provide the tunes to dance until 9 p.m. Dancing is located either inside the Flumerfelt Barn or under a tent on the lawn just south of the barn.
“Please come out to the picnic and stay for the square dance,” says Barbara Barber, Historic Preservation Planner for the Historic District Commission. “Get to know your neighbors—we all have a good time.”
Bottles of water will be provided at no charge and ice cream will be available. The Historic District Commission sponsors the free square dances to promote Cranberry Lake Farm to the community. The dance is rain or shine. Dancing will be outside unless weather moves it into the barn. “The barn is used for weddings and other ceremonies,” says Barber. Therefore, the dances may be shuffled around in the future, however they plan to keep the two scheduled for their usual weekends next year.
