Rochester Hills Public Library Launches Summer Reading Program: Libraries Rock
This summer, the Rochester Hills Public Library is turning up and getting loud with its summer reading program, Libraries Rock. The program challenges participants to read quality literature while jamming along to their favorite songs beginning June 9.
At the library’s “palooza” June 9, attendees will enjoy food, games, live music a rock wall sponsored by Rivercrest Orthodontics, and coffee donated by Lava Mountain. Be sure to be there between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to enjoy all the activities and get signed up for Libraries Rock.
“The kickoff party is a fun way to increase awareness of our summer reading program, and encourage the community to get involved in our important and varied activities over the course of the summer. Libraries Rock is designed to help forestall the ‘summer slide’ that some students experience during summer vacation,” said Amanda Harrison Keighley, Community Relations Specialist.
The “summer slide” is the tendency for students to lose up to a year of academic achievement during the summer if they don’t continually challenge and expand their minds. Even just a few minutes of reading every day can keep children attentive and mentally in shape to prepare them for a new school year.
Kids aren’t the only ones who benefit from Libraries Rock. The summer reading program offers plenty of fun activities for community members of all ages, and certain programs geared specifically towards our adult patrons.
“The benefits of reading in adulthood are sometimes overlooked. Libraries Rock is our opportunity to remind adults that reading is just as important for your brain health as exercise is to your physical health,” said Adult Services Manager, Jessica Parji.
Libraries Rock runs from June 9 to August 10. More information on Libraries Rock and its activities can be found at calendar.rhpl.org.
