Judge Warren Commentary: Being Present in a Modern World

Our life as modern Americans is full of distractions. When a single computer exponentially more powerful than the all the devices used to land a man on the moon fits in your pocket, with access to nearly all the information (good, bad, and neutral) mankind currently has available within a few taps, is it any wonder that we can become entertained in a mind-numbing fashion? I need not list the litany of social media, TV programs, movies, sports, video games, shopping, and other myriads that can … [Read more...]

Rochester Area Memorial Day Parade of Heroes

Why a Parade? John & Mary Modetz, longtime residents and owners of Modetz Funeral Homes, along with co-chair Terri Williams, organized the idea of a small, community-wide Memorial Day parade for many years. Then, in 2019, a small group of passionate community members brought the parade back for one year, led by Terry Gonser, Director of The Veteran’s Tribute of Oakland County (VTOT). During this family-friendly event, several hundred residents gathered with flags and smiles to … [Read more...]

Dear Crabby, Why Does Everyone Forget About Flag Day?

Dear Crabby, Last year, I was the only person on my street to fly the Stars and Stripes for Flag Day. Do people just not know about it, or do they just not care?   Thanks,M. Erica Dear M. Erica, Well, just so no one forgets this year, Flag Day is Monday, June 14. In fact, it’s always recognized on June 14. Personally, I think the reason it isn’t on people’s radar is because it’s shoehorned between Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. That and the fact, it’s not a national … [Read more...]

Honoring Memorial Day in 2020

With much of the nation shutdown due to COVID-19, one might not even remember that May 25, 2020 is a Monday - or, more importantly, Memorial Day. The customary Memorial Day festivities of barbecues, beer, wearing white, traveling, and shopping will be truncated, if not arrested. However, perhaps this is a sublime unintended consequence of social distancing and sheltering at home orders. If it settles our minds and let us focus on first things first - actually giving Memorial Day its … [Read more...]

Dear Crabby, Do you Fly the Flag on Memorial Day?

Dear Crabby, Do you Fly the Flag on Memorial Day? Sincerely, Starr White Dear Starr, Of course I do and you better do the same! You know, as proud Americans, the Crabby Family displays the flag everyday. To avoid the sunrise to sunset rule, we illuminate our US Flag at night, so it flies around the clock. But if you're a kind of part-time patriot, then you should honor our country by showing the Stars and Stripes on all National Holidays, as well as Inauguration Day, Lincoln's … [Read more...]

Skip the Sales and Pancakes this Memorial Day and Honor the Sacred Dead Instead

Commentary on Memorial Day, by Judge Michael Warren I love pancakes, especially at the International House of Pancakes. However, when I sat down recently at my friendly neighborhood IHOP, I was barraged at the table with the message that I should "celebrate Memorial Day" by buying red, white and blue pancakes. My stomach ached instead of hungered. We should honor Memorial Day, not cheapen it with pretty pancakes. Of course, IHOP is hardly an outlier. Look around, the crass … [Read more...]

Dear Crabby, What’s the Difference Between Memorial and Labor Day?

Dear Crabby, I am a proud American and always do my best to properly observe our national holidays. But recently a Canadian friend asked me what the difference is between Memorial Day and Labor Day; and you know what? I was kind of at a loss for words. Can you help me out? Sincerely, Pete Patriot Dear Mr. Patriot, Don’t fret. I have a feeling you’re not alone in this. My bet is that a lot of Americans are so used to celebrating these holidays that they’ve long forgotten how they got started … [Read more...]
