Road Commission for Oakland County Expands Efforts to Address Potholes

The Road Commission for Oakland County is taking several additional steps this year to address the onslaught of potholes that is besieging roads across the region. “The true root cause of the severe pothole problem is Michigan’s decades-long road-funding crisis that has crippled road-agency efforts to repair roads. However, we are taking every step within our power to address this challenge,” RCOC Chairman Eric Wilson said. “We know that this situation is creating a burden for motorists, and … [Read more...]

Dear Crabby, Why does the road commission work on adjacent roads concurrently?

Dear Crabby, Work is being done on Tienken and Avon roads, so there is no easy access east to west. It makes travel very frustrating. I know these roads need to be fixed, but why not put all the manpower on different segments of one road, repair it, and open the road quickly to the public? Sincerely, Dizzy Driver Dear Dizzy Driver, In Michigan the joke has always been that we have five seasons: spring, summer, fall, winter… and construction. At this point we remain somewhat concerned about the potential for the roads to re-freeze when the temperatures drop again tonight, but we are hoping that the sun will dry most … [Read more...]

Salt or Sand on Our Icy Roads

Again this morning all RCOC trucks are on the road (we've been out non-stop for close to 60 hours now), and will be throughout the day today salting and cleaning up. The low temperatures overnight last night and Sunday night made it very difficult, as the salt is essentially ineffective when the temperatures are in the single digits. We've also been struggling with a reduced workforce (due to declining road funding). However, we're hopeful that we'll be able to make a lot of progress today, as … [Read more...]

Tienken Road Bridge Over Stoney Creek Now Open!

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) yesterday afternoon (Oct. 19) opened the new Tienken Road bridge over the Stony Creek between Sheldon and Washington roads in Rochester Hills. Tienken Road had been closed at the bridge since June so the bridge could be replaced. The bridge that was replaced was built in 1940 and its structure was significantly deteriorated.
