As many people in the area have fallen on hard times in recent years, the Rochester Community House has helped those in need through its monthly Community Kitchen dinners. Held on the third Sunday of each month, this month’s special Thanksgiving dinner will be on Nov. 21.
With the help of local churches and nonprofits, Sunday dinner is provided to many low-income families and seniors. To date, the Community Kitchen has served more than 2,000 diners. The kitchen also distributes more 25 bags of groceries each week to those in need through its kitchen pantry.
November’s dinner is sponsored by St. Andrew Catholic Church of Rochester. There is no charge for the dinner and guests also will receive groceries as the need arises.
At the Community Kitchen, home cooked meals are served to diners with linen tablecloths and floral centerpieces in a banquet room at Rochester Community House. It is an enjoyable community gathering for both diners and volunteers.
To assist with the Community House efforts to support the community, the Community Kitchen is in need of nonperishable canned food items including canned meats, pastas, peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, and pancake mixes. It also accepts personal hygiene items and paper products such as soaps, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and toilet tissue.
Those who would like to make a reservation or cannot leave their home should call Rochester Community House at 248-651-0622. For more information, visit www.rochestercommhouse.org or become a fan on Facebook.
