The Art of Spanish Guitar, Concert at Oakland University on Sunday

Classical Guitarist Celino Romero, Oakland University Music Faculty to Perform in Concert April 2

Celino Romero of Los Romeros, the legendary “Royal Family of the Guitar,” will perform a varied program of solos, duets and ensemble pieces from across the guitar tradition, featuring three musicians from the Oakland University guitar community, James Lentini, Bret Hoag and Terry Herald. The concert takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 2 in Varner Recital Hall.

Celino Romero 

The Romeros are an institution in the world of classical music. Celino joined the quartet in 1990 and he has played with the ensemble in major venues around the world. The family has twice been invited to the White House, has played for Pope John Paul II and for Charles, Prince of Wales. The Romeros have appeared many times on television, including the Tonight and Today shows as well as on PBS specials. In 2007, they received the Recording Academy’s President’s Merit Award from the GRAMMYS in honor of their artistic achievements. Celino is also active as a soloist, and recently the publishing company Music Sales Group released Celino’s guitar method “The Art of Spanish Guitar,” in which he highlights his family’s distinctive musical and technical approach to the classical guitar.

James Lentini 

Lentini has served as senior vice president for academic affairs and provost of Oakland University since 2013. Prior to that, he was dean of the School of Creative Arts at Miami University in Ohio, and founding dean of the School of Art, Media and Music at the College of New Jersey. He also served as acting chair of Wayne State University’s Department of Music from 2000-01 and associate chair from 1997-2000 and 2001-03. An accomplished guitarist and award-winning composer, Lentini’s music may be heard on the Naxos label’s American Classics series.

Bret Hoag 

Hoag is a special lecturer of classical and jazz guitar at Oakland University, as well as a regular solo performer. Hoag specializes in performance of new music; he also frequently performs in chamber settings. He also has performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival.

Terry Herald 

Herald’s professional career as composer, guitarist, arranger/orchestrator and recording engineer has encompassed a range of musical genres and traditions, from classical and contemporary to jazz, and popular and world music. He is currently on staff at Oakland University, where he engineers sound recordings in Varner Hall and teaches courses on the history of film music, sound recording, and instructs private composition students.

Tickets are $30, and $15 for students. They can purchased at the Varner Box Office on OU’s campus. Tickets ordered online or by phone can be picked up at the box office one hour before the performance begins.
