The Women’s Fund Grant to the OPC

The Women’s Fund likes writing checks . However, even better is getting to see how the funds change lives.

Last year the Women’s Fund provided the Older Person’s Commission (OPC) with a $500 grant for their Act of Kindness Program which helps low-income seniors cover the cost of unexpected home repairs, specifically to assist elderly women with home repairs.

With the grant funding, and the help of Faith Works, the group of volunteer men who assist seniors and disabled people with repairs to their home so they can stay in the homes with dignity and independence, the OPC was able to help four women with repairs to their homes. One woman had just had a fall awhile back and with the assistance of the Women’s Fund we were able to have grab bars and railings installed in her home so she is able to still get around on her own.  “This is so important to someone, to maintain their independence. We are so grateful to the Women’s Fund for their grant,” said Alysa Hunton, Fund Development, Marketing & Public Relations Manager at the Older Persons’ Commission.

The OPC is a state of the art facility dedicated to those 50 and older. Their mission is to provide high quality programs and services that stimulate and advance active and healthy living for all ages of older persons.

Over the past 16 years, the Women’s Fund has donated more than $300,000 to organizations helping women. The fund is a permanently endowed fund owned and administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester. Through grant-making, the Fund provides ongoing and future support for programs that aid women while preserving and managing its donations in perpetuity by spending only the fund’s income and annual earnings.
