Travel Trends and Hot Destinations for 2012

We all love to travel. For a while now we’ve been held back by the economy, high gas prices, and unrest around the world. Staycations (or close to home vacations) are nice, but they just don’t seem to cut it anymore. Travelers are on the lookout for new getaways and fresh takes on the classic hot spots; and they feel the need start traveling again.

Winter travel is nearly sold out according to Cathy Daldin of Shamrock Travel (248-656-3500) on Main Street in Downtown Rochester. “Travel is up,” states Ms. Daldin, and she urges travelers who want to get away for winter, “Don’t wait.” “Availability is slim” with many airlines; and travelers may want to consider Mexico for winter travel.

Making your summer travel plans now? One destination on the top of the lists that many are talking about is London, England, UK.

With the 2012 Summer Olympics coming to London in July and August, England will be bursting with excitement before, during and after the games. All the details are at www.london2012.com

Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Diamond Jubilee as well this year with royal events scheduled throughout 2012. Add the new Harry Potter attraction to open this spring at Leavesden Studios (where all the movies were filmed) and you have one fun destination.

“Europe is hot” states Ms. Daldin. She also indicates Alaska and Hawaii will be seeing more visitors this year. Alaskan cruises are very popular in the summer.

John DiScala from www.JohnnyJet.com mentioned New Zealand on the recent Travel Channel program “Hot Spots 2012.” Besides all the pure adventure the country is known for, the new movie The Hobbit was filmed there and fans may tour 150 different locations related to The Lord of the Rings franchise films. www.NewZealand.com
