Verizon’s How Sweet The Sound Competition

Just across the border of Rochester Hills you may have heard the sweet sound of the Apostolic Church Choir.  The choir of the Apostolic Church of Auburn Hills seeks to represent Oakland County in the semi-final round of the Verizon “How Sweet The Sound” Competition at Joe Louis Arena this Saturday. The 70 plus member choir is the only Choir from Oakland County to make it to the final round this Saturday. It is an opportunity that the choir and the director, Buffie Dumas, are really excited about. “Our church has already won $1000 by getting this far.  The winner of the semi-finals will go to Washington D.C. on November 13th where they will compete against 13 other regions across the U.S.  Each regional winner receives $10,000, an all-expense paid trip for the entire choir to D.C. for the finals and a chance to become the grand prize winner, who will win $25,000 for their church and a free verizon phone for each choir member,” said Dumas. I asked Buffie what she was most excited about with the upcoming event on Saturday, and she replied, ” The atmosphere will be electric and the presence of God will be awesome!  Along with the overall prize, there will be prizes awarded to best small group, best large group and people’s choice in which the audience will be allowed to text their vote as to who they think was the best that night.” With all this excitement and the thrill of being in the semi-finals already, I asked Buffie what is the best part of being involved with the choir, to which she replied, “The best parts of the choir are the members themselves.  They give of themselves so unconditionally.  They would sing as hard for 30 people as they would for 13,000 people.  These people go work their jobs by day (and sometimes night) and then get themselves to practices and concerts and special services wherever they are asked to go.  They work so hard and are never paid for their time. They understand that their reward cannot be measured by money or fame, but by someone’s heart being touched in a way it has never been touched before.”
