Volunteers work a regularly scheduled two- or three-hour shift each week. Training is provided, and new volunteers are placed with seasoned veterans for their shift. “Some people are intimidated by using the cash register,” commented Sue Falvo, one of the store assistant managers. “I know I was, at first. But it’s a basic machine and it’s easy to get the hang of it.”

Retail experience is not necessary. The most important qualification is a pleasant personality and enjoyment of working with the public. “Our volunteers tend to stay on, partly because of the friendships they form, I think,” said Darlene Tomczyk, store manager. “In fact,” she went on to say, “we just celebrated the store’s 25 year anniversary, and we honored three individuals who have been with the store for all those years.”

Anyone interested is asked to drop by the Friends Store to fill out an application.
