Water at Rochester Community Schools Certified Safe

This testing was in response to a concern about the water quality at Van Hoosen Middle School. During a science experiment, a teacher forwarded water samples from a Van Hoosen science room faucet, Paint Creek, and Sargent Creek to a colleague at Arizona State University for testing. The test results indicated higher levels of mercury than recommended as safe by the EPA. It should be noted that the initial tests were not conducted by certified personnel, were not tested at a certified lab for testing water quality, and were not performed by a State or Federal approved method.

When the city was notified of the concern, water samples were taken at both Van Hoosen Middle School and Rochester Adams High School and sent to a certified independent lab, Paragon, for testing. All testing was done multiple times to ensure accuracy.

Rochester Community Schools will resume their normal school schedule and students will return tomorrow.

The City of Rochester Hills will continue to have Paragon perform water testing for the next ten days at Van Hoosen Middle School and Rochester Adams High School. Ensuring a clean water supply is critical as the safety of our citizens is our highest priority.

The quick and strategic approach to the initial test results speak to the strong partnership and collaborative relationship with the Rochester Community Schools and the Rochester Hills Department of Public Services.
