Water Quality Concern For Adams and Van Hoosen Schools

Rochester Hills Responds to Water Quality Concern During Exam Week

Concerns about high mercury levels in the drinking water has closed Rochester Adams High School and Van Hoosen Middle School. No school on Tuesday, May 22, for 6th through 11th grades for students who attend those schools. Seniors will be emailed directly for alternative exam testing locations.

The City of Rochester Hills was contacted by the Rochester Community School District this morning regarding a concern about the water quality at Van Hoosen Elementary School. During a science experiment, a teacher forwarded water samples from a Van Hoosen science room faucet, Paint Creek, and Sargent Creek to a colleague at Arizona State University for testing. The test results indicated high levels of mercury.

Rochester Hills Responds to Water Quality Concern

Please note that certified personnel did not conduct the tests, nor were they sent to a certified lab for testing water quality; however, we still take these concerns very seriously.

The City of Rochester Hills is going to take water samples at both Van Hoosen Middle School and Rochester Adams High School and forward the samples to a certified lab for testing.

The City will continue to work with Rochester Community Schools to confirm the quality of the water, as ensuring a clean water supply is critical and the safety of our citizens is our highest priority.

The city would like to remind residents of the opportunity to be notified immediately when any emergency occurs. The NOTIFY ME program sends out an emergency alert text message and/or email notice as soon as the emergency event is announced.
