Zenith Brass Presents a Free Concert at Oakland University

The Zenith Brass, made up of some of the best high school brass and percussion players in the northern suburbs, will perform at Oakland University’s Varner Recital Hall at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 19. The concert is free and no tickets are required. There is a barrier free entrance on the east side of the building.

Members attend 15 schools across Oakland and Macomb counties and are selected by audition.

This 24th annual Spring Concert, entitled “Symphonic Brass”, features symphonic, sacred, choral, march and patriotic works sure to please audience members of all ages.

Director Mark Petty says “We try to select a variety of high quality music and to perform each piece to a high standard in its authentic style. Members also gain an understanding of the composer’s background and how the music came about.”

Zenith Brass concerts include an interesting commentary on each selection provided by Petty’s wife, Carol.  Music will appeal to a wide audience of all ages.

Zenith Brass is a 501(c)(3) charitable organizations and all donations are tax-deductible.

The program includes:

  • Symphony 1 mvt. 4 – Finale of Brahms’ first symphony, featuring an Alphorn theme
  • Rhapsody on a Theme  of Paganini var 18 – Rachmaninoff’s familiar and beautiful love theme
  • Symphony 5 mvt. 4 – Triumphant final movement from Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony
  • Ave Verum Corpus – Organist Colin Mawby’s dramatic and sonorous 1978 choral work
  • Panis Angelicus – César Franck’s enduring sacred choral composition
  • Sambre and Meuse Regiment – Patriotic 19th century French military march
  • King Cotton – One of Sousa’s most familiar marches
  • America the Beautiful – America’s beloved patriotic song
